Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be a joke, according to an article in Ars Technica.
Prices for internet connections in Kazakhstan are almost surreal. Dial-up internet access costs $111 per month and a 1.5 Mbps DSL connection will set you back $3,355 per month. If you want the luxury of a 6 Mbps cable connection, be prepared to shell out a whopping $22,032 per month.
These prices are of course ridiculous by Western standards, but they become even more insane when you take into account that the average salary in Kazahkstan is $399 per month. Somehow we don’t think that internet usage is prospering in Borat’s home country. Sasha Baron Cohen couldn’t have invented a better absurdity if he tried.
And surely, with those prices, the internet connection you pay for has to be of insanely high quality and amazing stability…
