I was one of the original Cray 2 Field Engineers, working at Lawrence Livermore Labs, Livermore, California.

* Bubbles was the name of the first delivered system, Serial Number Q1. Q1 because it was half a Cray 2, as the promised system build had not completed.
* Called Bubbles, not because of the tank! the tank had a “waterfall” of fluorinert inside that was taller than the Cray 2. this caused the bubbles inside the Cray 2 to seak the highest point, the top of the “waterfall”.
* The bottom of the Cray 2, behind the upholstered covers, where the DC power supplies live. Bubbles formed in the winding’s of the transformers and rose past the modules to the top of the Cray 2.
* People would watch for hours as the bubbles rose past the modules to the top, and then be sucked out to the tank.
* The flashing LED panels on the top were actually attached to the processor’s: accumulator, address, status registers. Some programmer made these LED’s sequence like a Cylon when a processor was idle.
